Things to Pack in an Emergency Hospital Bag

Emergency Hospital Bag

Many women who are expecting babies will keep a suitcase packed full of essentials for the surprise moment when the baby arrives and they must quickly dash off to the hospital, but they should not be the only ones who keep such a kit. Hospital emergencies can happen at any time, so it would be prudent for everyone to have some sort of emergency kit to take to hospitals if need be, or even in case of an emergency requiring them simply to leave home. In either case, whether for a visit to a hospital or just as an emergency evacuation kit, everyone should keep some sort of bag prepared for such events with all of the following essentials. These can be carried along in case of an emergency or picked up on the way to the hospital or, for someone already in the hospital, can be fetched by a family member or friend.

1. Clothes

A change or two of clothes is always a good idea to have at one’s disposal, just in case of an emergency. People who have been committed to hospitals will no doubt greatly appreciate having clothing to don instead of the typical hospital gowns. This is particularly useful for people being released from hospitals who would wish to go home in real clothing, or in an emergency case where the clothes one was wearing at the time of the emergency or entry into a hospital may be ripped or soiled. It is important to note that in extreme emergency cases, hospital workers will have no qualms about cutting clothes apart to remove them and ease the patient’s pain. Thus, while staying in hospitals, many people will have literally no other clothes to wear.

2. Toothbrush/toiletries

People staying in hospitals will no doubt greatly appreciate having their own toothbrushes for all of their hygiene needs, as well as a variety of other desired toiletries such as brushes, deodorant, and glasses. These are items that the person would likely never do without while at home, and would most likely heartily enjoy to remind him or her of home while in the hospital.

3. Pictures or relics

Having pictures in one’s hospital room can make hospitals seem far more welcoming and comfortable. Additionally, hospitals adorned with handmade crafts or personal articles can make the person staying in the hospital feel far more comfortable and welcomed. Hospitals also often have gift shops, so perhaps a few dollars for a treat would be helpful.

4. Copies of medical records

It is a good idea to keep copies of medical records at any time that one might need while in the hospital. This can be a great reference for emergency situations where medical history or allergies could be an important factor. Furthermore, since many visits to hospitals are emergencies, one may visit a hospital that has no record of such important data. Furthermore, many hospitals would no doubt ask for a full medical history anyway, so having it prepared would make the transition easier.
